Programme Note
Ärr means ”scar” and is inspired by the song "Bleed" by extreme Metal band Meshuggah from Umeå. It is dedicated to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Baldur Brönnimann. The music of Meshuggah is highly complex and rhythmically intricate. Rhythmic material from the song "Bleed" was a starting point for the inspiration for Ärr and are used by kind permission.
Ärr (2014) is the second piece in a trilogy commissioned to the three major symphony orchestras in Sweden. The other two pieces are: Åkallan (2013) which is based on the traditional Swedish folk music Kulning, dedicated to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Kent Nagano. Öde (2015) which is based on recordings by classical singers like Jussi Björling and Birgit Nilsson and dedicated to the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Daniel Harding.
Ärr was commissioned by Stockholm Concert House Premiered by Stockholm Royal Philharmonic conducted by Baldur Brönnimann 10/4 2014.
