Programme Note
Right after the German-language premiere of my music theatre piece "Z" at the Bavarian State Opera's 2019 Opera Festival, my friend Constantinos Carydis asked me whether I could imagine a symphonic work with material from the music theatre. His idea immediately struck the right chord in me, as I had already been looking for a large-scale orchestral sound with the 11-piece orchestra when composing the music theatre.
Z Metamorphosis has become a 22-minute orchestral work (I deliberately don't call it a suite!), in which sound material, musical gestures and moments from the musical theatre "Z" are transformed into a symphonic amalgam. Vocal lines, dialogues and the linguistic style of the musical theatre function like a net behind the music and form a large-scale symphonic flow in the metamorphosis, in which language becomes music and music becomes language.
