Programme Note
Manische Episode (für Orchester)
In the manic episode, a single constellation of motifs is continually broken down and rewritten. Metaphorically speaking, the music runs into a wall again and again and with increasing intensity.
Inscribed in this constellation is a reminder of the head motif of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. However, although it is present almost throughout, it does not appear anywhere as a simple motif quotation, but is always overlaid by something else, embedded, like a message that no longer has a single originator.
The trace is processed in a literal sense without interruption and thus gradually frees itself from its origin in an ongoing dynamic process.
In the end, excess and standstill come together – and finally collapse into one another.
