Programme Note

For us Greeks, light is an area of mystery and spiritual search. In contrast to Western culture, which throughout the centuries found darkness much more fascinating, the search for the truth of light began with the ancient Greek philosophers and reached its symbolic climax in the rituals of the Greek Orthodox Church. Light also plays a central role in modern physics and metaphysics. Always speaking as a believer (and not as a religious person), it seems to me that light also has a divine function in our lives and everyday life. But what is it that makes light responsible for the history of the universe after the beginning of time?

Always speaking as a believer (and not as a religious person), it seems to me that light also has a divine function in our lives and everyday life. But what is it that makes light responsible for the history of the universe after the beginning of time?

The answer lies in the dual nature of its particles, the so-called photons, which have the privilege of shining both as matter and as a wave. In this way, information is transported to us from the depths of the universe. But is the journey of light in space also time itself? Does time stand still in a photon spinning through the universe at 300,000 km/sec? Are the photons themselves living - if you like - carriers of matter (as particles) and spirit (as electromagnetic waves)? Is the photon with its speed really the supreme rule and at the same time the limit of everything? In short: Is light God itself?
