Programme Note

The reawakening of my interest in electronic music is reflected in my new work Meta-Soundscapes (ROAI IV). As a teenager, I first came into contact with the electronic sounds of the synthesizers of the time (the legendary DX 7 and M1 were my "toys" after practising the piano!) Improvising, playing and experimenting with the possibilities of sound synthesis at that time unconsciously shaped me.

But it never meant more than a game. In recent years, this interest has returned – with the targeted use of samplers, live electronics and tapes – in various works such as Photonic Constructions II (Prism), Liebe. nur liebe or Metal Mechanics I-V.

With Meta-Soundscapes (ROAI IV) I tried to create an electronic sound without any use of electronics. These are soundscapes that are not based on real, normal sound (as we know it), but on sounds inspired by the synthetic world: Sounds that utilise the entire acoustic spectrum and extend the boundaries to noise: a "meta" level, in other words.

The work is the fourth part of my cycle ROAI ("the river", "the flowing", from Heraklit's "ta panta rei": "everything flows"), in which the flow of music is thematised in a pragmatic and philosophical sense. In Meta-Soundscapes (ROAI IV) I try to capture the flow of sound itself, often static sound, which changes through the use or reduction of instruments
