Programme Note

This is work is available in the C.F. Peters compilation, "Piano Works 1935-48" (catalog number noted). The rhythmic structure of these two pieces is 3-5-2 for No. 1 (written in ten sections of ten measures each) and 2 1/2 –3 1/2 –1 1/2 –2 1/2 for No. 2. Each employs a gamut technique, as applied to harmonies, which Cage later used in the composition of his The Seasons. The two pieces are sketches for parts of this composition.
