Programme Note

Apollon et Dionysos patterns, colors & dances for orchestra (2022)

In Apollon et Dionysos, a commissioned work for the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian State Orchestra, I explore two contrasting principles that have always shaped our thinking about music and art: order and moderation on the one hand, intoxication and boundlessness on the other, embodied by the figures of Apollon and Dionysos.

At the beginning of the work, the two sound worlds emerge separately from one another. Each has its own energy, its own temporality, and its own specific tonal expression – Apollon’s light, structuring clarity as well as Dionysos' ecstatic, intoxicated intensity. As the work progresses, the two figures merge into one another. Boundaries dissolve, an amalgam of sound emerges and leads to a brilliant climax in which only one thing remains.
