Exercises 26/27 (Snare Drum Peace Marches 1 and 2) (1988)

Exercise 27 is one of the two "Snare Drum Peace Marches," made for Stuart Smith's "The Noble Snare" collection of solos. The music notates a kind of isorhythmic counterpoint mostly in two, sometimes in three parts; its realization—modes of playing, dynamics, tempi—are open, though with a suggestion that fingers be generally and variously (various parts, nails, knuckles, et cetera) used, and that the longer durations of sounds be articulated by, for instance, sliding, scraping as well as trilling, et cetera. Demilitarize the snare drum with a new kind of marching.
