Programme Note

Krámata
for piccolo flute, bass clarinet, percussion, piano, violin, and cello (2001)

When I was working on the initial ideas and instrumentation for my work Krámata (“Alloy”) in 2001, I felt the need to bring together contrasting worlds: high and low sounds, rhythmic and arrhythmic playing, modality and atonality, the ancient and the modern.

These thoughts led me to the above-mentioned combination of instruments: an “alloy,” if you will, in which the extreme registers of the musical range play a leading role. Ancient Greek tetrachords and modes, spatial effects, micro intervals, and odd rhythms rise to the dry, highly expressive character of the work.

In 2002, Krámata was awarded third prize in the International Günter Bialas Composition Competition.
