Programme Note

”Oceano” was commissioned by Resounding Letters Concert Series as part of the Turku Culture Capital 2011 Project. The Resounding Letters Concert Series transported the piece along a old medieval maritime postal route from Sweden via Åland to Finland and brought the work to different Music Festivals and Concert Venues including Stockholm Concert Hall, Volter Kilpi Festival, Katrina Chamber Music Festival and Turku Music Festival.

The inspirational starting point for the work has been the water or a abstract ocean on which different elements emerge, travel, disappears and re-emerge. Events on the surface co- exist with slow currents in the depths and though for example waves constantly change their form and character the basic element remains the same.

The work consists of two separate movements that share the same basic material. The first movement introduces the listener to a calm musical expression that gradually starts to develop and grow in different directions. The musical character of the second movement is more agressive but contains also playfully rythmic material. The different arcs of development progresses throughout the piece in different paces finally carrying the dramaturgical arc of the work to a conclusion and return to the original musical expression of the first movement.
