Programme Note

This piece, commissioned by KölnMusik on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Kölnischer Kunstverein, was premiered in the Cologne Philharmonie on May 15, 1989.

It is a work of absolute music for 4 obbligato keyboard instruments and an orchestra of almost classical proportions. The composition can be performed with 4 grand pianos as well as with 2 pianos and 2 electric organs or harpsichords. I have not attempted to fulfill the characteristic laws of a concerto here. The indispensable cadenzas of the genre, the virtuoso runs and the idiomatic turns of phrase of a dialog between soloist and accompaniment are missing. Instead, the greatest possible coherence was sought in the texture of the keyboard instruments, as if these four sources were a single body of sound.
