Programme Note

In the spring of 2016, I met the amazing, late pianist Lars Vogt in Vienna. He invited me to be the composer-in-residence for his summer festival "Spannungen" in Heimbach near Cologne for the following year, and asked me to write a new piano trio.

And so the piano trio "Lichttürme" (Towers of Light) was completed in the fall of 2016. I imagined the music beginning in pitch darkness and creating beams of light that rise like towers so intense that, by some miracle, they become real, visible objects – towers made of light, as prayers, as good wishes. This kind of play of images and values is what I associate with this music.

The premiere took place on June 23, 2017 with Christian Tetzlaff on violin, Tanja Tetzlaff on cello, and Lars Vogt on piano.
