Orison
(for solo cello)

Orison is the fifth movement of my Vespers for Mother Earth, a large-scale work for choir and instruments commissioned by The Judith Neilson Institute and completed in 2020. Designed to be detached and performed on its own, Orison was premiered by Julian Smiles, to whom it is dedicated, for the Melbourne Digital Concert Hall on 15 August 2020. Coming straight after the apocalyptic Zenith movement of Vespers, I’ve described Orison as “a ruminative, sometimes unquiet yearning for a sublime realm beyond the fragmented temporal world”.
