Shakespeare Scenes was commissioned by Simon Desbruslais with funds provided by the Britten‐Pears Foundation and the RVW Trust, for a live concert and recording project 2012‐2013 in conjunction with The Orchestra of the Swan, Stratford‐upon‐Avon and the Signum recording label. The cycle of pieces from the first, The Magic Wood (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) where the solo trumpet plays Puck and the string orchestra the magic wood to the closing piece, The Magic Island (The Tempest) in which the trumpet is the now contrite Prospero, a solo viola Caliban and the orchestra a magic halo, follows selected scenes from Shakespeare plays, addressing various aspects of each.
