Programme Note
Latest is a striking testament to Betsy Jolas’s eternal creative youth. At nearly a century old, Jolas delivers an orchestral score of astonishing vitality, proving that her “latest” work is never a conclusion, but a new threshold of discovery. Far from being a nostalgic retrospective, the piece functions as a musical “cabinet of curiosities,” where a century of experience is distilled into a sonic kaleidoscope. The work unfolds with a theatrical flair, characterized by a constant flow of energy, alternating between high-speed percussion, elegiac murmurs, and orchestral explosions. Jolas weaves subtle echoes of the past, from Ravelian sparkles to Mahlerian distance, into her own singular language. Latest is a celebration of musical freedom: the score features “free zones” where musicians respond to the conductor’s hand signals, creating a living, breathing dialogue. The piece culminates in a striking vocal “tutti” exclamation, a witty final flourish from a composer who continues to look toward the future with curiosity and a playful sense of wonder.
“These are, set to music, a few recent reflections on how I perceive this world, which rushes by without waiting for me, yet which I still observe from the vantage point of all these years, to the tune of my memories”
