Programme Note
On État, Wohl pushes his distinctive blend of electronics with acoustic instrumentation to a new level, exploring the new dimensions that masterful production can provide. "While being fascinated with classically notated acoustic composition I also became interested in all the music production tools currently available and was drawn towards combining both methods," Wohl explains. "I wanted to get as deep as I could into the production of sound."
État, which in French means "state," references an evocative image, both ancient and futuristic, that Wohl kept imagining as he created the music — an artifact from the past that holds a message, buried deep in the earth and slowly becoming exposed, until it is discoverable. "I find the notion pretty fascinating," Wohl says, "that something is always there — knowledge, experience, an idea — you just need to be in the right state, or have the right lens, to be able to perceive it."

No. 6 Experimental Album of the Year
11th December 2019
Daniel Wohl's latest music remains a Pandora's box of unknown sounds and concussive juxtapositions. The Los Angeles-based Parisian is among the most spirited electro-acoustic composers working today…The song on État titled "Dream Sequence," with its mysterious, symphonic layering of acoustic and electronic instruments, is an apt descriptor for much of this resourceful composer's music. Wohl's latest album offers more song-like structures, including several distinctive beats and wispy vocals from Poliça's Channy Leaneagh. Still, État remains a wonderfully twisted house of mirrors, where electronic gear and traditional instruments are treated as equals and often rendered indistinguishable from each other.

État is at once cinematic, grandiose and variable in texture and color, a highly entertaining listen that's obviously created with a ton of care. True to Wohl's words, the production is indeed creative, conjuring plenty of bewitching moments out of minute details. Its best tracks convey naturalistic and architectural imagery across a paradoxically wide temporal spectrum, simultaneously ancient and futuristic.
