Carl Nielsen’s songs are an invaluable part of the Danish songbook, and the composer has, arguably more than any other, entered the musical hearts of the Danes. The complexity of his symphonies is put into perspective by his simple yet personal songs, which were particularly important to him. If he knew that his songs today are being sung in children’s rooms, in schools, in churches and everywhere in Denmark, I believe he would be happy.
The six arrangements were commissioned by the Carl Nielsen Quintet in 2016.
