Programme Note
I was very touched by the simplicity, formal clarity and subtle harmonic language in Schumann’s setting of Heine’s Sie liebten sich beide (Op. 13, No. 2). I wanted to follow the structure of the original quite closely - a short piano introduction, repeated almost exactly when the vocal line begins, leading to a contrasting section for the second verse. This combination is used again for the third and fourth verses, followed by a transformed piano coda. I have taken the falling half-step gesture and phrase structures in the original and have embedded them within my own setting and harmonic language to create something which I hope is a deeply personal, yet faithful response to the original.
