Programme Note

This song from ‘Encounter’, Op. 33 (‘Meet the Cool of the Morning’ [Nas utro vstre chaet prokhladnoi]) is also known as ‘Song of Encounter’. The song became one of the most popular Soviet songs and one of Shostakovich’s best known compositions.

The composer re-used ‘Song about the Counterplan’ in ‘Michurin’, Op. 78 as well as in ‘Poem of the Motherland’, Op. 74 and ‘Moscow Cheryomushki’, Op. 105. The song was also used in Jean Renoir’s 1936 film ‘La vie est à nous’.
