Programme Note
The First Echelon: Film music by Dmitri Shostakovich (1955–1956) includes one of his most widely recognized pieces, commonly known as The Second Waltz. This music originates from the Soviet feature film The First Echelon and more precisely from the suite drawn from its score, Op. 99a.
The piece itself is the “Waltz,” which appears as the eighth movement of the suite. Its popular title, The Second Waltz, does not come from the original film score but from its later association with the Suite for Variety Orchestra (also known as Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra), composed after 1956. In that context, the waltz becomes the seventh movement of the suite and the second waltz within the work, hence its widely used name.
