Programme Note
Commissioned by Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra in memory of David Elliott Kelso. Premiered by the Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Asier Puga on the 6th April 2019 at St. Peter's Church Notting Hill.
Beyond the Road Begun is dedicated to the memory of David Elliot Kelso, who disappeared on his usual afternoon walk in the hills near his home in Calabria, Southern Italy. A Scottish academic who served as Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Further & Higher Education until his retirement, he had also been President of the Scottish Esperanto Society.
My piece is inspired by an imaginary walk through the landscape in which David used to walk (Andrew, David’s son, generously provided me with photos of the area) and the idea of a language that was created with the aim of allowing international communication for everybody on a basis of mutual respect and understanding. Rilke’s poem A Walk also influences the mood of the work.
