Programme Note
Soon after arriving, I discovered there was an organ at the back of the concert hall. It was slightly out of tune but had a beautiful, clear tone, with two manuals and only a few stops. The pipes for the upper keyboard were all one meter to the right, while the pipes for the lower keyboard were all to the left. So when one alternated between the two, it had an extreme but natural stereo effect with the sounds bouncing back and forth. This piece follows in the same spirit of American minimalists as the opening prelude, but while composing it, I kept imagining something massive, perhaps an ancient monolith or futuristic city, or some fantastical mythical creature, emerging from the ocean. As a side note, you may hear a lightly prepared piano in the mix, which was achieved by dampening the upper strings with my scarf, and placing a banana on top of it for some extra weight.
