Programme Note

The same material continues from Quiet City A, but now punctuated with a melodic motif that reminds me of French renaissance music, as well as a muted bass string acting as percussion. The overall tone of both these pieces is rather subdued, but later on, rolling arpeggios create a clamorous, thundering chasm, reverberating the lower strings. I had in mind the contrast between the noise and chaos of certain areas of Berlin (my neighbourhood of Neukölln in particular) and the utter stillness of the forest outside Hannover. I was also thinking of greys and browns; rusted metallic old bridges and underpasses in the sprawl of modern cities.
