Programme Note

The ostinato figure in the right hand of this piece is inspired by the repeating B-flats in “Le Gibet” from Ravel’s “Gaspard de la Nuit”. If Ravel’s piece were a massive, majestic planet, this piece could be a distantly orbiting moon or asteroid. A yawning, waking melody meanders through occasional chords, eventually developing into rumbling arpeggios, and climaxes in a baroque cadence. Bathing in the aftermath of these final chords, I recorded a set of chimes that were hanging outside the concert hall, which I’d ring every time I walked past them. While composing this piece, I would occasionally receive pictures of monuments and scenes in various Persian cities from a friend who was traveling throughout Iran, which gave inspiration to the title.
