Programme Note

The opening piece of this cycle is derived from the finale, “Fantasia”, which was so varied that I wanted to mine material from it to create this musical bookend, foreshadowing the album’s conclusion. I took a motif from the middle of the Fantasia and expanded it, almost as a meditation, exploring the textural possibilities in the patterns. This piece also utilizes the pipe organ, like the following one, Behold. Most of this album was recorded with the microphones fairly close to the strings, to hear the piano’s detail, but I also wanted to capture the sound of the hall and its full reverberance, and so the Prelude begins (and ends) with the mics placed at the back of the hall, some 30 meters away, gradually bringing the piano closer and deeper into the listener’s ear.
