Programme Note

Cante Jondo takes its name from the Andalusian genre of Flamenco folk song, literally meaning 'deep song', which is characterised by a mournful intensity and the Moorish influence of Middle Eastern scale patterns. While the piece shares these qualities, the opening section is in fact an extended paraphrase of viola material from Poznań, written earlier the same year. The piece was commissioned by the Cardiff Music Festival and premiered at Y Tabernacl Church by Steffan Morris on 16th September 2011.
