Programme Note

In the summer of 2015 my daughter Gabriel got married. A few months before the big day, she and her husband, Wesley, asked me to write them a piece. I was, of course, most delighted and honoured to accept and also to work with their suggested text, the poem A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever, by John Keats.

The overall style and approach is, I think, fairly clear from a brief examination of the score, but one word of advice is to not over do the ‘expressive romanticism’ inherent in the writing style. A ‘less is more’ approach is recommended. On the whole, let the dynamics do the expressive work without adding too much to it.
