Programme Note

is there something you can tell us is written for the Anima Quartet, and commissioned by SWR/Südwestrundfunk. The Anima Quartet first performed is there something you can tell us at Theaterhaus Stuttgart on 7th June 2014, during the festival Lost & Found - Stimme.Text.Szene.

The quartet's title and the titles of the individual movements are taken from Cynthia Troup's libretto to Turbulence.

I - degrees of freedom
II - hidden by an almost perfect balance
III - we are taught that it is out of reach
IV - for the real earth we do not know yet

The four movements explore uncertain terrains, and any sense of timbral definitions or musical direction is constantly disappearing. The four movements are, in a way, the flip side of more or less everything else I have written in recent years; here are no layers of extra-musical associations. I felt this was my chance to surrender to the stringed instruments' mastery of nuance - in my piece, the point of contact of bow and left-hand fingering are never stable, every vibrato could develop into a glissando, and vice versa.
