COMPOSER’S NOTE
What’s in the lake? is a 3-minute tone poem.
"A small lake on a calm day. Tranquil, fluid, meditative. Occasional pockets of energy – an
alighting insect, a fish eating it, a bubble of air from a mysterious source. Suddenly, but inevitably, figures burst out of the lake; people who were here before, surrounded by the beautiful pavilions where they used to meet. The surface of the water remains calm.”
What’s in the lake? was written for the 2012 BBC Proms ‘Cage Walk’ curated by Tim Hopkins,
to whom the music is dedicated. It was designed to be heard by listeners viewing Ai Weiwei’s
2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in Kensington Gardens, London.
