Composer's Note:
In Spite of All This was composed specifically for New York-based ensemble Newspeak in 2005. This piece was written at a time of national and global upheaval that left many people feeling powerless and overwhelmed. Howard Zinn recently commented on the role of artists in this situation, observing that “the artist transcends the immediate. Transcends the here and now. Transcends the madness of the world. Transcends terrorism and war.” In writing this piece I sought to describe the vulnerability, anger, compassion, and optimism of this unique time in history.
