Programme Note

Det är skimmer i molnen och glitter i sjön,
det är ljus över stränder och näs
och omkring står den härliga skogen grön
bakom ängarnas gungande gräs.

“There is a glow in the clouds and a shimmer in the lake,
there is a light over beaches and capes
and around the magnificent green forest stands
behind the rocking grass of the fields.”

Thus Gustaf Fröding’s Strövtag i hembygden begins. The poem portrays a return to a childhood landscape that does not exist: “It is empty, it is burnt, it is ravaged and bare…”. I have used Fröding’s title in a figurative sense: The lost landscape that I ramble through in this composition is tonality, that is, music in major and minor keys. The piece builds upon a few simple melodies which appear, in essence, as tonal remnants in a landscape of free tonality.
