Programme Note

Seven pieces for piano

This little collection of Shostakovich’s children’s pieces was written for his 8-year-old daughter Galina, who was learning the piano. Galina herself has publicly recalled, and with the laughter of memory, how she found herself unable to play these charming pieces at a school concert and her father had to get on to the platform and play them himself. The composer later recorded them.
