Programme Note
Arrangement of "Tea for Two" from the 1925 Musical "No, No, Nanette," by Vincent Youmans.
To dear Nikolai Andreevich Malko as a token of my best feelings.
This delightful arrangement of the celebrated dance-tune ‘Tea for Two’, from the American composer Vincent Youmans’s musical comedy ‘No, No, Nanette’, was originally made in 45 minutes. The conductor Nikolai Malko had challenged Shostakovich to orchestrate this hugely popular number in under an hour. The sparkling orchestral lollipop that resulted eventually ended up in Shostakovich’s ballet ‘The Golden Age’, op.22.
