Programme Note

Replicas with Gilded Frames (2006/2007)

The form principle of Replicas with Gilded Frames is rather simple. In the first type of sections I analyse and take a very close look at some deep piano chords in a kind of extreme “slow motion”. Low piano notes, at least if being played on a good instrument, have a rich inner life that is very interesting to take a closer look at. These sections make the “gilded frames”, seven in all.

In the other type of sections, “replicas”, I reveal more of my musical traits and compose movements of different character, with the same low piano harmonies as the point of departure.
These two types of movements, “Frames” and “Replicas” appear alternately through the piece until they meet in a last small fragment-movement.

It is probably all about listening and observing on one hand (frames) and, on the other side, about daring to intervene and play (replicas). And in the end one discovers that the one material lives in the other and vice versa.

Form is not only about postponing the end, but also about combining opposites.
