Programme Note

« Imprints of Time » for Flute and Cello is the third part of a trilogy which has Time as the common theme. The other works of the trilogy are « Paintings of Time » for Saxophone and string quartet (2004), and « Spectre of Time » for Flute, Viola, and Piano (2004). The choice of Time as the common theme is connected with the dedication of the trilogy to the memory of the French composer Gérard Grisey (1946 – 1998). In his all too short career, Grisey was intensely concerned about the matter of Time in music. In his later works this obsession provided the basis for the formulation of the musical course as an oriented, algorithmically controlled process. Besides owing its process-like character to the ideas of Grisey,

« Imprints of Time » also uses as basic material a kind of non-harmonic spetras which are well known from the music of Grisey.
