Synopsis:
Dressed as a student, the licentious Duke of Mantua seduces Gilda, unaware that she is the daughter of his hunchbacked Court Jester Rigoletto. Rigoletto is duped into abducting Gilda and delivering her to the palace. When Gilda appears en deshabille, Rigoletto swears vengeance on the Duke and engages the assassin Sparafucile to kill him. Sparafucile’s sister Maddalena is in love with the Duke and pleads with her brother to spare him. He agrees to her wishes and tells her he will kill instead the first person to arrive at the inn where the Duke is staying that evening. Overhearing their conversation, Gilda sacrifices her own life to spare the Duke.
