Composed for the 30th Anniversary of the October Revolution
First performance: 6 November 1954, Moscow, Bolshoi Theatre Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra – Alexander Melik-Pashaev (conductor).
The work was presumably assigned the opus number 96 during the preliminaries of its first performance in 1954 on the occasion of the thirty-seventh Anniversary of the October Revolution. Erna Meskhishvili states that Samuil Samosud conducted the first performance. Also known as ‘Festival Overture’ and ‘Holiday Overture’. The introductory section makes use of No. 7 (‘Birthday’) from ‘Children’s Notebook’, Op. 69.
