Programme Note

Louis Moreau Gottschalk composed much of his Symphonie Romantique in the summer of 1859 on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe (a French colony) in the remote mountainous region of Matouba. There is considerable evidence that he worked on the piece at fever-pitch, intermittently, and along with a host of other works, thus in some degree of haste. This rapid pace, not surprisingly, led to a fair amount of notational lapses in the original manuscript score, not so much as regards pitches, but dynamics, phrasing and articulations, where in his creative fervor he often simply assumed that he had sufficiently covered all such details, or assumed perhaps that performers would understand what was intended from the prevailing context. As editor of this publication, I felt that it was necessary to clarify or remove all ambiguities, i.e. to restore missing dynamics, phrasings, to reconcile various notational discrepancies, and in principle, present the performer with an unequivocally clear edition, which would be both respectfully "authentic" as well as practical and user-friendly....It is hoped that this edition will finally bring this remarkable work by the then only 30-year old Gottschalk its proper deserved recognition, and that it will satisfy both the highest scholarly as well as practical standards. --Gunther Schuller
