Programme Note

In 1948, Morton Gould's most celebrated ballet, Fall River Legend, was produced by the American Ballet Theatre in New York with choreography by Agnes de Mille. Fall River Legend was based on the famous trial of Lizzie Borden, accused of the murder of her father and his second wife. Though Borden was acquitted, Gould and de Mille chose hanging for Borden's demise in the ballet.
