...the second Serenade of 1948 is hefty enough in both concept and form to be included almost in the symphonic cycle. The lengthy first movement intones a foreboding and long-breathed theme that bears all the marks of gravity and scope indicating a major statement. With its somber slow movement and frenzied rondo finale, it makes one realize the designation "serenade" hardly does justice to the unusually serious and ambition work...
