Valseværk I (1984)
- Edition Wilhelm Hansen Copenhagen (World)
Programme Note
Valseværk (Literally Waltz-work) means in danish both waltz-piece and rolling-mill (steel). This curious coincidence is exploited in this Idyl for vibraphone, which would have been unthinkable without the consumate mastery of Gert Mortensen's mallet-magic,
Other composers' ambitious solo percussion works lasting very long and featuring more instruments than an elephant can carry, tempted me, on the request of Gert Mortensen, to write a small piece for one instrument, based on an innocent little waltz in F major.
The piece also exists in a version with choir: An extended sound perspective and echo possibility, but also used in opposition to the vibraphone.
