Programme Note

Fthinopoinos is a transcription for violin and piano of the second movement of my violin concerto... although in fact I wrote most of the movement in piano score in the first place, before orchestrating it. I started work on that first draft in December 2000 when I was living in Paris (the title means "autumnal" and I had the first ideas for the piece in Autumn...), and picked it up again to finish it on 4th February 2001, after hearing of the death of Iannis Xenakis, one of the great composers of our time, and to whose memory fthinoporinos is dedicated.
