Programme Note
Verses was composed in 1978 for the singers of Kings College London and their director, Ernest Warrell, who gave the first performance in Westminster Abbey, November 1978. The text comes from verses 1, 2 and 4 of the psalm:
Lord, thou hast been our refuge: from one generation to another.
Before the mountains were brought forth, thou art God from everlasting,
and world without end.
A thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday: even as it were a day
that is past.
