Programme Note
This scene was composed for Ronald Murdock, who commissioned it and gave the first performance, at the Wigmore Hall, with John Pigneguy, horn.
The texts for Rondeaux come from medieval French love poems. ‘Est il paradis, amie, est il paradis qu’amer’? (Is there paradise, love, is there paradise except loving?) I wove together a selection of texts, creating a form akin to medieval rondos. The evocative opening image (‘will you stop rivers running and take hold of cranes as they fly so high’?) returns to close the piece.
