Programme Note

The Nocturne for cello is one of a pair of night pieces that I wrote for the Muhlfield Trio. First came ‘Lullaby’ (for clarinet) which imagines a mother telling bedtime stories to her child. The 'cello duo is further into the night. It is one continuous song, in which the mother sings as much for herself as for the child.

'Lullaby' for clarinet and piano and 'Nocturne' for 'Cello and piano were composed in September 1988 for the Muhlfeld Trio, who commissioned them with funds provided by Greater London Arts.
