Four Rounds From "The Green Children" (1990)
- Novello & Co Ltd (World)
Programme Note
‘The Green Children’ is a children’s opera in two acts, to a libretto by Kevin Crossley-Holland.
This classroom pack of rounds contains four songs from the opera:
Strawberries red! in Strawberry wood
Look, look, all over the ground.
Blackberries black! A bushel! Four pecks!
Look, look, all over the ground.
Raspberries mauve
The colour of love.
Here in this glade
Look what we’ve found!
As green as grass
That springs from the ground:
Two green children.
Here and below, most and least
North and south and west and east
Bless us, Lord, bless us all
And bless this feast. (A Shrove Tuesday grace)
May Day and morning,
This their beginning,
Flower faces shining,
Green blades now rising.
This world is greening,
Greening is growing,
Growing is living,
Living is blessing.
Sowing and reaping
Through the year’s turning,
Dying to living,
Song without ending.
