This piece encapsulates how I felt one spring afternoon earlier this year. I had just got home from a beautiful (and very cold) few days in the Yorkshire Dales and was due to fly to America the next day. While I'd been away spring had arrived in London and I experienced a deep sense of inner calm and contentment though tempered with a growing panic at the thought of all the things I had to do before leaving (including writing this quartet!). I stared at the spring sky until my eyes hurt, then set to work.
