Programme Note
CHIAROSCURO, for solo percussion, was written in 1981 at the request of the British percussionist and James Wood. The title (borrowed from painting) refers to the gradually accelerating rhythmic scheme of the piece which is 'shadowed' by the parallel harmonic plan. The rhythms are the hard-edged lines while the pitches are the ‘shading' which helps to articulate the argument.
