Programme Note

Tzigane (‘gypsy’) was inspired by gypsy lore and music, and by the late romantic use of these traditions. In particular, I was stimulated by The Wind on the Heath, an anthology of writings by and about gypsies, collected by John Sampson.

With the exception of a brief and slow central section, the whole piece moves at fast tempi. In wishing to give the impression of an improvisation, new, and apparently new material is introduced throughout the work. Wide ranging moods and rhythms supersede one another in quick succession, controlled and repetitive rhythmic patterns fluctuating constantly with more rhapsodic phrasing.

Tzigane is played without a break and lasts approximately nine and a half minutes. The first British performance was given by Nona Liddell in London in 1980.
