Programme Note

'Love Bade me Welcome' was commissioned in 1985 for the Enthronement of the Bishop of Winchester. It was written to be sung after the reading of the Holy Gospel where Christ asks 'Peter, Son of Jonas, lovest thou me?'.

The music is simple, and I hope, transparent enough to match one of the greatest mystical poems of the English language.

It was first performed by the Cathedral Choir, conducted by Martin Neary at Winchester of 28th June 1985.
